    Altec Blackjack

This seller has 21 pair of 511b horns! I wonder if he's parting out some Altec speaker systems -- he's selling a bunch of Altec woofers etc. too. He's got lots of other audio stuff as well--obviously a tube lover....

No mids ! The 515E was built for vented box enclosures.. Not so good in large horn enclosures 210-211. Ok for the A5-A7...

??? Not as extended down low as earlier models, but up high still more extended than any original 416 I was exposed to. The 'E' seemed to be a consolidating of 416, 515 parts thanks to Ling's financial gutting.

I got this from Bill Meckles website that I happen to agree with..

All 515's frequency response are rated at 20-1000 Hz and most of them are crossed way below that..

The 416-8B is rated at 30-1600 Hz,the 416A is 20-1600 Hz.So how do you feel that the 515's are more extended than the 416 ? Just curios GM..

I personally prefer the 416 over the 515.Specifically the 416-8B..Your the opposite..

Honestly can't address what GM said- but spec sheets are like politicians. They only lie when they say something...

    Re: Altec Blackjack

True.. But it's a known fact that 515's only go out to a 1000 Hz at best IMO.. Most I've seen are crossed at 500 Hz for a reason.Never seen one crossed at 1200 Hz.

It's just my opinion and observations. The way things sound is totally individual.

    Re: Altec Blackjack

Hey AB, GM has replied very nicely. His JPEG is the same as that you also mentioned.

It is with an IB arrangement, and that means the mentioned fr of 20 to 1000 HZ is going to be extremely flat. The 515 series are far quicker, superior, flat-er, and with way more high-end response than any 416x series. Its more industrial grade by design compared to the 416x. The 416x has a bit of (mechanically) equalized response to make it sound bass-y and sweet (?) compared to the 515 which is ruthlessly clinical, and that is the reason why many find the 515 to be lacking in bass.
